Strategic Plan 2021
Help Plan the Future of the Ayer Library!
In February of 2021, the Ayer Library began working to develop a new Strategic Plan to be filed with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) by October 1, 2021.
This planning effort represents the Ayer Library’s first significant attempt to gather information from the community about library services since the renovated and expanded library building opened in 1997. Our hope is that the results will provide us with guidance for the next five years as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic and face a rapidly changing future.
The Library hired Barbara Alevras of Sage Consulting Services to facilitate the planning process. Barbara will assist Library Director Tim Silva with the planning and hosting of focus groups and planning exercises for library staff members, the Library’s Board of Trustees and the Friends of the Ayer Library, and members of the community at large. A Community Survey will be used to gather information from the broader community of library users and, ideally, non-users as well. Once the data gathering exercises have concluded, the results will be analyzed and a plan will be drafted. The plan will contain specific actions to be undertaken over five years (beginning in July of 2022) intended to achieve a set of objectives drawn from the needs identified in the information gathered from the community in 2021 (and in the years to follow.) Plan objectives will also be derived from assessing the current state of the Library’s physical infrastructure, reviewing goals and objectives identified for the Library in the Town of Ayer’s 2017 Master Plan, among other sources.
The final draft of the Strategic Plan must be submitted to the Ayer Library’s Board of Trustees (in late summer 2021) for review and approval. Once approved by the Board of Trustees, the Plan will be sent to the MBLC for final approval on or before October 1, 2021.
While not necessary for participation in the State Aid to Public Libraries Program, an approved Strategic Plan is a requirement for libraries that wish to apply for state funding from the Massachusetts Public Library Construction Program (MPLCP) or for federal Library Service and Technology Act (LSTA) grant funding administered by the MBLC. LSTA grants can fund a wide variety of projects and programs, from assessing local history collection preservation needs to addressing the opioid epidemic to creating an early childhood education program and more.
